that it will host numerous events discussing SIP Trunking technologies at
the VON Enterprise Conference and Expo, December 4-6, at the Cobb Galleria

On Monday, December 4th, Pulvermedia's Vice President of Content &
Community, Carl Ford, will lead sessions discussing SIP Trunking standards
(from 1:30 - 2:30 PM), which will be followed by a session highlighting
carrier and vendor perspectives (from 2:45 - 4:00 PM). On Tuesday, December
5th, Carl will host the "Birds-of-a-Feather" session (from 6:00 - 7:00 PM)
discussing future opportunities associated with SIP Trunking, and
evaluating the issues that remain to be addressed in order to bring these
opportunities to market.
Senior level executives from BellSouth, Cbeyond, GlobalTouch Telecom,
iBasis, Ingate Systems, Level 3 Communications, NeuStar, Quintum
Technologies, Sphere Communications, and many others will share their
insights and opinions during these sessions.
Sip Trunking is gaining rapid popularity because of its ability to
provide local, toll-free, nationwide, and international calling services at
rates much lower than traditional analog services. Beyond cost, SIP
Trunking is having a profound influence on the way enterprises buy
equipment and select services from carriers.
"This technology is poised to fundamentally change the way companies
communicate, by blending premise equipment with network services to
distribute tailored calling features around an enterprise -- where they're
needed -- and all at a lower cost," said Carl Ford, Vice President of
Content and Community for Pulvermedia. "SIP Trunking helps companies apply
logic to where their features and functions are deployed, and we're going
to discuss all of the issues and opportunities associated with this
important trend next week at VON Enterprise."
VON Enterprise s a one-stop opportunity for companies, and executives
who are looking to set strategic directions, evaluate the latest IP
communications technologies, deploy solutions, and quantify the
return-on-investment for IP voice and video offerings. For additional

FALL 2006 VON -- Service providers are spending hundreds of millions of dollars on IPTV -- even though they aren’t precisely certain where the technology is going, said panelists at the Fall 2006 VON show Monday.

“Right now, it’s wide open,” said Verizon senior product manager Jeff Harris, part of a panel at the Telephony IPTV summit. “It’s still too early in the game to put a stake in the ground and say ‘this is going to happen.’”

Along the way, Harris said he expects advertising models will change, although he -- and the other panelists -- couldn’t specify exactly how advertising approaches to IPTV will evolve.

Marc Le Clerc, manager of Ericsson’s IMS Expert Center, suggested that service providers will have to provide IPTV across different platforms, which will require vendors to cooperate on developing workable standards. Le Clerc said Ericsson’s studies have found that teenagers will want to seamlessly shift from watching IPTV on a cell phone screen to a large television screen.

Rex Wong, CEO of DaveTV, said it will be important for providers to allow users to get IPTV different platforms, but still be interactive in a “non-intrusive way,” especially if it targets desirable demographics like the 18 to 35 age group.

“This group isn’t watching TV now,” Wong said. “We have to engage in their behavior that is out there.”

Shari Barnett, director of Media Services at Microsoft TV, cited the video watching interests of one interesting viewer -- Bill Gates. She noted that in a email Gates told her he watched videos ranging from physicist Richard Feynman’s lectures to lectures on AIDS research as well as golf tournaments. Barnett used the example to illustrate the variety of programming the public will want.

In case you've been on the moon and don't know what BitTorrent is, here's a brief description from Cohen's show bio:

BitTorrent is both the name of the peer-to-peer (P2P) file distribution protocol and the client application for it created by Cohen. BitTorrent is designed to widely distribute large amounts of data without incurring the corresponding consumption in server and bandwidth resources (and typically, monetary fees attracted as a result of that). Currently, BitTorrent has more than 45 million users worldwide.

Though infamous for its use by peer-to-peer networkers -- who don't always share legal content -- BitTorrent is making strides to go legit, as its deal with Warner Bros. earlier this year shows.

Reading Om's news of a potential partnership between MetroFi and AT&T, I'm not sure I agree with his assessment that "it puts a serious cramp in the [muni Wi-Fi] plans of others, namely Earthlink," simply because I think you have to doubt AT&T's seriousness in this area. This could be one partner who stands to win more by the partnership failing, than succeeding.

Clearly we will know more if and when the details come out, but I'm not sure exactly what AT&T would bring to a muni Wi-Fi partnership, other than maybe not opposing such deployments, as the company has done in the past through various means.

Also not sure what Om means by calling MetroFi a "laggard" in this space -- seems to me they have a pretty good record so far for a starup. You just hope that the "partnership" news doesn't turn out to be a pyrrhic relationship for MetroFi, bogging down its progress while it waits for a the slow steps of AT&T to keep pace.
